Why We Are Building Skulptor: The AI IDE Manifesto
Every AI coding tool bolts a chat panel onto an existing editor. We think the entire IDE needs to be rebuilt from scratch.
The current generation of AI coding tools follows the same pattern: take an existing editor, add a chat panel, and call it an AI IDE. Cursor forked VS Code. GitHub Copilot is a VS Code extension. Windsurf built on top of existing editor infrastructure.
This approach has clear advantages. You inherit a massive extension ecosystem, familiar keyboard shortcuts, and battle-tested editing capabilities. But it also means you inherit every limitation of a codebase that was never designed for AI-native workflows.
Skulptor takes a different path. We are building an IDE where AI is not an add-on but a foundational layer. Every UI element, every workflow, every interaction pattern was designed with AI collaboration in mind from day one.
This means visual canvases where you can see your agents working across branches. It means rollback scoring that grades every AI action before you accept it. It means a brand system that ensures AI-generated components match your design tokens automatically.
We believe the IDE of the future is not an editor with AI. It is an AI development environment that happens to include a great editor.
